How to build a shotgun fruiting chamber
Start with a clear plastic storage tote and lid, somewhere around fifty to sixty quarts so light can reach the mushrooms. Drill quarter-inch holes about two inches apart across every surface — all four sides, the lid, and the bottom — which is where the "shotgun" pattern gets its name. Those holes provide the passive fresh air exchange mushrooms need. Then add a few inches of perlite to the bottom: soak it, let it drain so it is damp but not pooling, and spread it in an even layer. The perlite is the humidity engine, slowly releasing moisture into the chamber as it evaporates.
Using and maintaining your chamber
Set your colonized cakes or blocks on a small stand or tray above the perlite so they are not sitting in water, and close the lid. From there, maintenance is simple: mist the walls and perlite a few times a day to keep the air humid, and fan the chamber by lifting the lid and waving it for fresh air a couple of times daily.
